A couple of months ago, I photographed a hockey game for the first time. Some friends of mine play for a local team called The Screamin’ Sheep and when they were ready to play their first playoff game against Timbits of Doom at the local Jack Setters Arena, their assistant captain and my friend, Kevin McLean, asked me to come out and take more photos of the team in action. Naturally I said yes, because I am always looking to learn when it comes to shooting new things.
Like any other sport, you have to be ready and aware of the game play, so as not to miss key moments. I have never played competitive hockey before, but I grew up playing shinny on ponds and rivers all over southern Ontario, so I had a pretty good idea of what to look for. I had to shoot through glass for the first game, but for the playoff game, Kevin informed me that I could walk around to the side of the team bench and hang out there, unobstructed by marked up glass. This proved to be very beneficial. Apparently the team loves the photos I took. They also want me to be the team photographer next year, which I will happily agree to.
